NYSC:
How has surfing, and surfing in NY in particular, complimented and improved your lifestyle?

MN: It helps me to stay stoked. I see how people can get so jaded after leaving NY for a while. I freak out when I see good clean waves even if its only chest to head high. Go to Hawaii for a few months and you kind of get over waves like that. It keeps me going.

BW: Surfing in NY is unique to anywhere else in the world. I love having the greatest city in the world an hour away. NY gives you the ability to explore other avenues outside of surfing and still catch plenty of waves. I think this makes you a much more rounded surfer and you can see this with the core of girls and guys that surf out here.

NYSC: Tell us about the film, the process and the players:

1 | 2

MN: Brian, Sal Calvi on the production side of things, and I put a full on team effort. Everyone kind of had their own job to do, and I think that based on the way it turned out everyone's hard work paid off. The players are Aaron Cormican, who lights up the Outer Banks. Kyle Garson destroys an anonomous left in Long Beach. Dean Randazzo tears apart New Jersey. Aussie Sunny Russell going balls-out in what I am calling some of the heaviest East Coast footage ever on tape, and let's not forget Chris Harmon racking up more tube time than G-Lo at Pipe. There are also many more local standouts doing their thing right here in NY.

BW: North of Nowhere focuses on surfing on the Northern half of the East Coast. Mike and I both love surfing and love film. Making these videos gives us the opportunity to do what we love and give something back to the surfing community.

Mike has really good relationships with the regions best surfers. Lots of work and lots of luck goes into getting the right guys at the right spot on the right day. Surfers like Ryan Carlson, Kyle Garson, Chris Harmon, Charlie Weimar, Chris Martin, Arron Cormican and Sam Hammer all worked real close with Mike to allow him to get the best images. We also had a lot of outside help from companies like Hy Hruby, Unsound Surf, and Lost Enterprises. Our music contacts like Lava records helped us put together a killer soundtrack. Bruce, Java and Dan Bailey also hooked us with great music and killer Indo, Hawaii and NY footage that you will see in the bonus sections of the DVD. Sal Calvi did an amazing job setting up the DVD and coming up with the artwork. I think there is something for everyone on this DVD.

NYSC: Who are/were your biggest influences?

BW: Growing up surfing I always looked up to guys like Charlie Bernowich, Dr. Leo, Chris Fay and Big Ed. Of course my family is the biggest influence on me. Also, my closest friends which are family.

MN: My friends who got me into this - Chris and Ed . Also Dave Juan for being on it when all those other guys quit surfing. And my wife Jen.

NYSC: What kind of equipment did you use to shoot/edit?

BW: I use a Canon GL-1 / GL-2. We hope people notice and enjoy the quality of this film, it is far superior than C.T. All the editing was done on one of three Macs.

MN: I shoot with a Canon GL-1, and edited it with Final Cut Pro.

NYSC: Mac or PC?

MN & BW: MAC

NYSC: What would you recommend to someone who wants to shoot/document waves. Equipment/lighting etc/editing software?

MN: For someone who wants to get into the video thing, my best advice is get a mini-dv camera, a mac and a tripod. The most important thing that people tend to over look is that you need to keep the camera still. A tripod is essential and will make a word of difference in your finished product. Also try not to zoom in and out. Set the camera and leave it alone. Too much in and out makes your audience dizzy. Pray for good waves and sunshine. Try to get 2 or 3 surfers together each time you shoot so you dont fall a sleep on the beach (like when you get your girlfriend to video you and she missed all your waves because she is bored out of her mind waiting for 20min between each wave.)

BW: Just get out there and shoot. Trial and Error. It's really hard to do when the waves are good. That's why Mike does most of the shooting and I do most of the editing. I give him the credit, dealing with a bunch of temperamental surfers, standing in the cold all day, driving all over the place, missing waves...are you sure you would want to do this?

NYSC: What's next for Mike and Brian?

BW: Mike is one of the best persons you could work with. I love doing these videos together and think you will see bigger and better releases in the future from us. Well, I am off to Cali to Judge the US Open.

MN: Hollywood? Doubt it probably just another crapy surf video.

"North of Nowhere" will be available at local surf shops on Long Island by mid-June, 2003 and online shortly thereafter.
