Andy was apparently stung by a wasp today in Montauk. He unfortunately later went into cardiac arrest and passed away. Keith heard about it and I called Ivory Serra, who confirmed. So it is unfortunately true.

After surfing great waves in LB last Friday evening after the wind switched, I packed up the van and drove out to Kessler's place, pulling in the driveway at 1:00 AM. He was already asleep and I slept in the van, as planned. We surfed a lesser known spot with Patrick Falco and later another spot closer to Ditch. The waves were good and Kessler took off on some micro-bombs!

Later we had an incredible VW bus BBQ courtesy of Bill and Keith in the dirt lot until dark. A few weeks earlier we did the same. Andy was very happy out in Montauk on the weekends and he was surfing great. And of course he was still skating hard. He was alway looking out for his friends and I am grateful that we became good friends. I will always remember his generosity in letting me surf his new custom CC slider sans kook cord in the midst of the ditch goof crowd. His tiny Chinatown kite was a blast, as well. He apparently purchased 50-100 of these to give out to the kids in either the DR or Costa Rica a while back (I forget exactly). That's the kind of person he was.

Keith, Bill, Kessler, and I were planning a surfing camping weekend. Unfortunately, that will never happen. But we'll remember Andy and slide a few for him...

what a day that was dub!

i surfed LB in the early morning and shot out to mtk for a late morning session
scored some fun ass waves in both counties.
ran into dubs and kessler as soon as we arrived
we spent the rest of the day at the beach relaxing and enjoying the beautiful island we live on
i remember sitting there and watching the waves
we were all shot from the 3 sessions in 15 hours
towards the end of the night i recall my last conversation i had with andy
it centered around life, good days, and bad days
we both came to the conclusion that days like these are what get you through life and tough NY winters
we had made some plans for some more surf/camping trips

appreciate life! enjoy it! never let a moment pass! love your family and friends!

i just got a email from steve at 5boro about this. andy my girlfriend and i started the ny skate association together , he brought my girlfiriend and i, steve , andy , billy , nevet from kcdc and a few other dedicated people together to build a better future for ny skateboarding. andy really was a great person and my girlfriend and i will deeply miss him. he was such a fire ball .. passion poured from him in everything i saw him do around me. really nice to have met him and shared bowl sessions at the autum bowl here in brooklyn with him. r.i.p

i must admit i am speachless to say the least. andy will be missed in so many ways.

RIP ANDY. i think a surf n turf session in his honnor must be organized.

an interview of andy from 1999 ( I CAN HEAR HIM SAYING THIS TOO)

http://www.masha.curvedspaces.com/kesslerint.html

some great EXCERPTS:

If heaven exists, what do you want God to say to you at the pearly gates?

AK: You’ve done a good job, but you left a few things out, so we’re sending you back.[/size]

Who are your heroes?

AK: I don’t really have any heroes…people that I’ve admired…Tony Alva, actually today turns 42, is probably the real grandfather of pool riding and skateboarding. He’s a good guy, just what he’s done, and the fact that he keeps at it and is still doing it. I don’t know that I have too many real heroes. I like regular people.

5 words that describe you?

AK: Humorous, humorous, broken humorous, intense, and humorous.

What are in your pockets right now?

AK: Probably about five dollars, my keys, and that’s about it.
