And you guys are worried about judging bodysurfing heats? That just seems wrong.

I don't think anybody's worried, Hydro just asked how its done.

I'd love to be able to take part in this, to bad its on the same days as the 'nj Classic Long Board contest.

Thanks Bubba - I'm confused about your worrying question henry - I'm not worried about anything - more confused because I come from a time when there were a few organized sports we played competitively and seriously (football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse (LI), soccer, etc.) in NY and everything else was pickup for fun including wave riding. Wave riding was fun in a "jesus christ its only water" kind of way - those sandy's videos look like incredible fun - but nothing to take too seriously. To me it seems that the imported seriousness to NY about surfing comes from the people that have spent enough time in HI or CA to change their original local outlook. they then come back here and want to re-create the serious surf mentality - I know we get waves but the size and consistency doesn't seem to warrant the incredible amount of attention NY has gotten for surfing lately - I mean jesus, there is even a Mollusk on the fucking east river, I understand it serves and artist/surfer market but come on now. I think you said you were an older LB guy henry, if someone told you 30 years ago that NY would get this much attention for surfing by 2007, what would you have thought? I am probably wrong about all this - as Logcabins said above - the contest is not about winning its about having some fun - just in an organized way - so maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks - carry on.

My only point was that bodysurfing is the most soulful(I know I used the "S" word please don't pounce) form of wave riding there is. Contests are not the essence of surfing in my opinion. To "judge" a bodysurfing contest seems to me a bit strange.
It seems like an "expression session" would be a good format where the bodysurfers themselves voted who was "best" and bought the winner a case of beer. Then the "winner" would share his "winnings". Does this seem like too much "imported seriousness, HG?" Mollusk? It seems like another place that sells incredible boards and shows surf movies and gives away free burgers and beers would be a GOOD thing.

I'm going all out for the free case of beer and hopefully six weeks of disability

my apologies henry I'm half stupid half crazy and didn't read between the waimea shorey and worried about judging lines to see the soulful expression center message there and who doesn't think free burgers and movies, from very cool people selling beautiful functional works of art in Billyburg, aren't all good for all surfers around NYC?

OK dudes going for the case - little inside assistant (ala Barry Bonds elbow pads) here:

http://makomitt.homestead.com/index.html

I spoke with this guy about 2 years ago about his mako mitt and he was shocked I found it on the web - I thought it would be a cool thing to check out and throw in my suitcase when bringing boards on a trip was not practical. The guy didn't know if he would get to production but said he may sell some in the future (for a price beyond my interest). I just checked now to attach here and was suprised at how much fancier his website is - check it out.

We're officially a go for SUNDAY at _Lido West!

We'll be running heats all day so whatever time u guys want to gather is cool with me.
Maybe say 10 or 11 to allow for the tide to drop and everyone to get there?
its mellow so whatever u all want to do is fine, just let us know.
Stooooked for this!! Great idea chicken!
see you on the beach!

cool stuff. I built a little hand paipo last year (http://www.nynjsurf.com/forum/empty-t5685.0.html). it came out really pretty-like. I left it at someone's house though- hafta hunt it down.

nice, chicken and I just spent an hour bodysurfing an lbc spot...way fun and chunky, surprised there was no one surfing? turned into a goof off bodyboard / kneelo session, but actually got a few that stayed open...

what's this I hear about mike stewart being around?

won't be able to make sunday, as I have to work in the shop, but have fun
