Egg Hunt ‘09
Scattered around the net are dozens of freshly colored eggs I’d like to add to the quiver. I could’ve probably found a few dozen on Surfy Surfy and Shipworm alone, but figured I should hunt a bit more and see what I could find. Picking up from last year’s egg hunt, here’s another dozen that won’t stink up your living room:

Shave Ice
Last week’s arctic blast groomed a nice south swell recession session for those free to go. Those hanging on to their jobs probably weren’t very productive. Designated driver Mike Rovnyak stood behind the lens and dealt with the wind chill while familiar faces got covered up on what was arguably the coldest day of the winter. Scroll through Michael’s photo gallery for more mid-winter gems, including a bunch of the The Artist Formally Known as Snapwater who was finally on the right (or wrong) side of the lens.
Speaking of TAFKAS, Tommy Buckets launched a new blog, “A Clock with No Hands“, which features some of his inspiration along with a really nice write-up of TJ Gumiella (Violence with Grace) who was recently photographed charging some thick NW Slabs along with Will Skudin.
Office shredders got a rare look at some of the World’s best snowboarders wrecking more havoc on the FDR than the monster potholes left by the snowplows. Thousands came out on thursday evening to check out the Red Bull Snowscrapers, featuring Shaun White, Terje, ‘Squan’s Shayne Pospisil and more.
We only stuck around for the first jam session and it seemed as if some of the riders were having a hard time maintaining speed. Some went big, others looked like they were going into the net. Next time they’ll have to make it ten stories. Kudos to RB for putting on a free event for the masses on the LES. Bring it back bigger and louder (and a touch warmer) in 2010.
It seems that lately all NYC events end at Katz’s Deli, which is becoming a problem for my waistline. Any remote chance I had to sport my sister’s jeans was squashed by pastrami on rye and a knish along with some split pea soup and a few pints. Hey, by the time I was done I could feel my feet.

“I’ll have the corned beef, I’m Irish.”
“What, did I break a window?”
Surf, Snow and Cinema by the Slice
Reports of the best day in months (today, photo left) was not at all comforting while downing candy coffee in between fire drills this afternoon. It may be time to find a new job that is a little more surf friendly, though in this economy they say beggars can’t be chooses.
Still, as good as it may have been, a 19 degree surf session may need to be more of the alpine variety, which if things pan out right, should occur on Saturday. In the meantime, the Red Bull Snowscrapers event will have to do. I’m not much into these types of events, but for some reason I was pretty stoked to see it being built while sitting in traffic on the Williamsburg Bridge. Dust off the old Terje videos if you haven’t already.
On the subject of surf and snow events, Christian Driggs sent word that his Philly Surf and Snow film festival is happening in March. I first met the Driggs brothers (and “June” filmmakers) at the New York Film Festival when they stopped me and asked where to get a good slice of Pizza. Stumped for a moment, I suggested they walk up to Carmine St. (about 20 minutes). Instead, they found a spot around the corner from the Theater and came back stoked on the slice. You got to like a guy who is internally wired to find a good slice of pizza in Manhattan – especially with all the lousy pizza around town.
Speaking of good pizza, if you can’t get a table at Keens, Pronto Pizza on 36th and 6th is real good.
Surfy Surfy posted Thomas Campbell’s Tour Dates for his new movie. The dates showed only West Coast venues, but rumor has it there’ll be a screening this summer at Mollusk in Brooklyn. I’ve been watching this trailer for what feels like a year now and really looking forward to “The Present”. Check TC’s website for more information, photos, etc..

Fowl Bowl
We’re probably not going to see Kelly Slater doing a McDonald’s commercial tonight, but if it was 1983, maybe we’d get to see MR waving a drumstick around. I guess if you root for the Yankees, you’ll pull for the Steelers, but I’ll try to root for the Cards, if nothing else but for the NY retirees in the desert.
I got a speeding ticket doing 57 in a 55 outside Pittsburgh once, and I’ve no love left for the place.
Enjoy the Bowl.

“What Exit?”
Reports were calling for long period east groundswell, and every ounce of stuffing was needed to cushion the ride down. Spot checking along the shore reached an all-time high as most beaches just weren’t working. High tide buries it, and low tide loses it, but somewhere in between it works.
We ended up where we started (no surpise), which provided more than enough time for China-Ty to sell me on his latest board concepts. Tail flex, mid flex, carbon rods for memory – will a shaper team up with this shredder already?!
We suited up, if for no other reason but to empty the tanks, and managed to snag a few fading, late afternoon eastern lines. Of course it was worth it.

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.
Dirty Cream Bowls
The trip down the GSP can be as slow as the waves are fast. In the land of the one-half-day swell, an internal debate was raging as to whether to make the 100 mile loop in the face of stiff afternoon westerlies. Sunday afternoon reports were not looking good.
A rendezvous with Morgunz (pulling off a double sesh) and a run in with the police provided more than enough motivation needed to chance some raw sewage and score a few empty, dirty clean lines.

Give thanks!
Post Obamalypse
Three days of solid waves might be a sign of the Apocalypse or just left overs from the Obamalypse but, either way, missing it sucked. It was probably easy to sleep this morning in if you got some but, for those who didn’t, this morning’s post apocalyptic, balmy junk sesssion had to do.

I woke up this morning to visions of Blainz Peak working. It wasn’t today, but in the junkyard of left over lefts, she still finds the right.

Enduring flat spells require a juiced up EZ Pass and a full tank. Evan Conway and Tom Connolly squeezed the last bits of late summer/fall juice out of the gas tank and the ocean on a Outer Banks excursion, catching NY XPAT Will Skudin finding East Coast Pipe perfection along the way.

I can close my eyes and recall just about every memorable right I caught in Long Beach. Come to think of it, everyone you get is memorable. On Saturday night at the New York Surf Film Festival, the music turned a deeper shade of bass when I noticed Dubs was at the controls. About an hour before, people were beginning to wonder where he was when Match told me he was out surfing and on his way in. I went up to say hello and without missing a beat he turned around, took off the headphones said “I got the sickest right this afternoon on my Pavel quad.”
Long time Long Beach surfer Ron Hamilton made sure his old friend doesn’t forget it.
