Aloha!
Mahalo’s to the Bunger Team and their sponsors for bringing wholesome entertainment to enthusiasts within the New York surfing scene that in my mind has come a very long way since my entry in 1997.
What hurt’s surfer’s and especially the younger enthusiasts, are surf shops and related retail organizations that continue to take while sitting on the sidelines with no acitvities.
How can you call yourself a surf shop when you only take?
Part of being a Surfer is to show Aloha or Love from the heart with very little or no expectation and the sport created for “Pure Recreation.”
There’s been a blog about soul surfers and the missing soul. It’s pretty simple.
If your soul is held captive by a job, spouse, significant other or family member, you will never surf from the Soul and why many surf breaks are fueled by unncessary Drama!
Living Aloha has been the biggest challenge of my life because we’ve been taught by our Kupuna or Elders to look after the well being of other’s before yours.
It’s a very tough way of life in a dog eat dog world, at the same time, it’s rewards are like no other and pure.
Our society has a way of conditoning many to maintain extremely high expectations that sometimes makes very little sense and a huge cog in the wheel that will eventually put a lid on your soul and when it is held captive, you forfeit the luxury of free expression within those activities such as surfing.
Only when your soul is freed will one be able to truly understand who he or she really is and able to bring cheer and love to those within the inner circle of their lives.
Andy Irons is a good example of someone caught up in the world of competitive surfing that can be counter productive to that free flow mentality many enjoy while maintaining a lasting relationship with the sea.

Soul surfers are well equipped to bring cheer and love during tough times and I challenge you today to help those in need from this day forward.
The expression of Giving is a very powerful remedy that has been around ever since the creation of man that has dwindled while continuing to eat up our communities and especially our youth from the inside out.
In many cases, a simple hello with an ear to ear grin can be uplifting and make a huge difference in a fragile life.
I am hoping that this expression of Aloha by the Bunger Team will spread abound and light a fire under those sponsors and businesses that continue to take without giving.
It’s not the way of the surfer!
When we eat, play and share good laughs it brings us closer as Surfer’s and a key ingredient missing in so many Surfing cultures abroad that its sickening.
Last summer in Montauk, I witnessed some of the most awesome displays of giving.
With the amount of surfer’s in the line-up there was very little or no infraction filled drama and instead many veteran surfer’s lending a helping hand to those whom possess lesser skils. I’ve never seen it like that ever during the 8 years I’ve surfed there.
The introduction of the Surf Lodge that caters to Surfer’s, was one of the biggest items absent in the surf scene because when a day of good surf is accented with a great night out, the experience is near complete. Surf movies, live music, exotic drinks, awesome food, cheerful fellowship and a 6:1 ratio of women versus men is what the doctor ordered.
When I asked Donavon Frankenreiter what he though about the “Lodge” and the New York Surfing scene after his performance, he paused, look out into the crowd and said, Ed, this is AMAZING and mentioned that those whom have worked hard to make it reality should be commended.
He’ll be back!
Fellow Surfer’s Dr. John Cavanaugh and Dr. Phillip Trujani provided many surfers with complementary back adjustments that allowed many to continue surfing during the back-to-back summer swells and with no expectations of fee’s.
We also paid tribute to the day’s of old with all-day beach BBQ’s complete with Live Music, Good Food, Cheerful Fellowship and enough spirits that was transfered to the “Surf Lodge” to punctuate a true day of surf.
We invited everyone and it was nice to see the Italian Surfing Crew entwined as they brought the beat of the Conga’s that matched well with the Ukulele and Spanish guitar.
Mahalo’s to the Bunger Team for a great example while hoping that it will be an infectious display helping to take the New York surfing scene to yet another level while providing a positive example.
The best surfers are those that have the most fun in and out of the water!
See you at the Surf Lodge!
With Aloha,
Ed
