This Water Tastes Like Piss

We’ve all heard and said it before. Once you leave the 5-boros and take a swig of your in-law’s tap water, the first words out of your mouth are almost guranteed to be This water tastes like piss!

It turns out there may be some truth to that statement, and according to an AP report released today, it may also taste like a “A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones..”

Of course, the amounts in the water are too small to taste, but there’s a growing concern about the long term health risks posed by the consumption of trace elements of pharmaceuticals.

But you ask, just how do these drugs get in the water?

“People take pills. Their bodies absorb some of the medication, but the rest of it passes through and is flushed down the toilet. The wastewater is treated before it is discharged into reservoirs, rivers or lakes. Then, some of the water is cleansed again at drinking water treatment plants and piped to consumers. But most treatments do not remove all drug residue.”

It’s stories like these that make me yearn for the days when the drinking water just smelled like rotten eggs.

Drink up.

1,000 Times Better Without a Fin

“I was shaping the Jeff Kramer model and the Hydro Hull and in between I shaped a board for Mickey Dora. He said it worked 1,000 times better than the one he had. So then he went out at Swamis and I was on the top of the hill watching him and I said, ‘1,000 times better without a fin’ and he said, ‘Oh yeah, I hit some guy out there’ (laughs).”

241 Days 11 Hours and 26 minutes

Until this three time lottery loser passes out at the finish line after going 26.2. The first and only time I ever did the NYC Marathon, some guy lit up a cigarette next to me right after we crossed the finish line together. It made me wonder why I ever bothered to quit smoking in the first place. That was when everone started throwing up, so I took an involuntary nap in the grass (luckily), and then spent the next 20 minutes trying to find a bananna.

I don’t know why I feel the need to go through the punishment again, but I do. Anyway, the last time I ran it, we had a nice run of surf. You can thank me later.
