Spot Check

We checked the spot that we hit yesterday evening and it was still perfect, but a little on the small side, So we decided to drove north a bit to check The Bowl. When we got there it was packed out and ragged, although it had way more size. Everyone was going for it and dropping in all over the place – should’ve checked it earlier.
We drove south again to check The Lot, a one spot take off, and there were six, maybe seven others on it and they seemed to have it dialed in. There was a smaller section down from the main takeoff, but it was a little sketchy trying to shoot the posts. It wasn’t something that we really wanted to deal with.
By this time we had already been driving around for about 45 minutes, and everyone was getting antsy, so we drove back to first spot, and settled on a small, perfect little bowl with not a soul around.
It had a familiar feeling.

Check the Photo Room for more from the weekend shred fest, including this 19-shot nugget.

Feets of Snow

Last week Whiteface got 24″ of snow, and on Saturday our day trip got off without a hitch when my little brother picked me up at 3am and we drove straight through, for 4 plus hours, to find nice conditions and a relatively empty (-4 degrees and windy) mountain.
On the way up I remembered these three Mexican kids who drove through the night from Acapulco to DP the Ranch going off. We all paddled out just before dawn and surfing with them was a highlight of that trip. Putting in a little more effort once in a while definitely sweetens the pot.
It’s been over 15 years since I’ve been up in the Adirondacks, and it was the first time I’ve ridden Whiteface. Nice wide trails, soft afternoon snow in the trees and friendly locals made it easy to deal with the speeding ticket around Lake George, the hallucinations of little people crossing I-87 while I tried desperately to stay awake on the way home and a gnarly case of swamp ass (can’t claim that one — I was smart enough not to drive up in my thermals and snowboard pants — nasty).

One day you’re eating an Everything bagel with roast beef, American cheese and mayo on 4th ave and 86th street, and the next thing you know you’re paddling out at Pipe. Well, more like a quarter mile from Pipe, but who’s checking?
