“That’s an advantage of experimenting, you’re going to put out a few turkeys on your own to see how far you can go in one direction. These aren’t boards you sell to the public, but if you don’t put out any turkeys and don’t push the limits you don’t know how far you can go or what does what. The extremes really tell you what does what and then you can refine it back to where it’s all around. You should always ask the question any time you do something more complicated “Is this actually better than something that’s simpler?” Quite often you go back to what’s simple because it works just as good. It has to be an improvement.” - John Belik; “Like Sculpture, But Functional“; Newyorksurf.com; July 2007

I’ll be at Johns Hopkins Kennedy Krieger Center until Wednesday November 28, while my daughter goes through a series of tests that will determine the severity of her condition (Rett Syndrome). What goes up must come down.
Have a drink, say a prayer, or even better get a tube for her. See you Thursday ~
The Day After

The way I surfed yesterday morning you’d think I already had too much turkey. Still, it was fun to be out with a few friends for a pre-feast surf session on a November morning that felt more like Southern California than the North East.
Fast forward to the afternoon with the in-laws, feeling ever-thankful that my sister-in-law found a Marine Man, and that my other sister-in-law was able to duplicate that miracle of a Christmas Turkey from 2003. In my house epic turkeys are about as common as epic swells.
Probably the only thing I wasn’t thankful for, on an otherwise beautiful day, was the mysterious tar or oil balls that were washing up on shore in Long Beach. But thanks to the surfers who were on it and, unfortunately for them, in it.

I don’t think this island is what Double-O Joe Dolan had in mind when he was singing this song.
