Long Island, NY Halloween Swell 2004

My wife was in DC this past weekend, where she completed her first official Marathon: The Marine Corps Marathon. She’s not a Marine, however she made sure to let me know that she appreciated seeing them at all the water stops along the way. When I asked her how she managed to complete a marathon with barely any training her response was, simply, “it ain’t childbirth.”

Happy Halloween. We better get a lot of trick-or-treaters tonight because I can’t afford another root canal. The horror. After a little web-surfing, and in between mini-boxes of Dots, I found some photos posted from a memorable Halloween swell 2004. Enjoy and stay in shape because it looks like fall has finally arrived.

The Takanassee Beach Club is a 5 acre parcel of land consisting of a beach, a lake, and three historic, U.S. Lifesaving Service buildings over 100 years old. It has been privately run for decades but it is slated for development contingent on a CAFRA (Coastal Area Facility Review) permit from the NJ DEP. Local residents, historians, environmentalists and elected officials want the permit denied so the property can be preserved and become a public beach park one day. Read more

In Case You Were Wondering

We’ve had surf this fall, that’s for sure, and chances are guys like Robert Callanan got it digitized and categorized to keep your collective memories sharp. But what about the Tropics? NOAA predicated an 85% chance of an above normal hurricane season, and a 5% chance of a below normal season in their August 9th Press Release.

The Center for Ocean Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) reports that to date only 1977 had experienced less Tropical Cyclone Activity and “Unless a dramatic and perhaps historical flurry of activity occurs in the next 11 weeks, 2007 will rank as a historically inactive TC year for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole. During the past 30 years, only 1977, 1981, and 1983 have had less activity to date (January-October 25).”

I thought this was the worst Hurricane Season of my life, but apparently not. Come to think of it, I should read my own blog.

“Autism is a dreadful brain development disorder that is diagnosed in many children today. So many that it is believed to be more common than pediatric cancer, AIDS and diabetes combined. Autism is neurobiological, very complex and little understood. It lasts an entire lifetime. There are no boundaries ethnically, racially or socially and boys are affected four times more readily than girls. Children with autism have difficulty communicating, interacting socially and are prone to repetitive behavior and rigid routines.” - Gerry Lopez on Autism / Cleanest Line

Gerry Lopez wrote a nice article about his experience doing the SEA Paddle Around Manhattan, and the impact Don and Julie-Ann King’s son Beau had on him, for Patagonia’s “The Cleanest Line” blog.

Phone rings, Dave answers the phone:

“Hello.”

“Hey, you want to connect down in Jerz for an afternoon / evening session?”

“Can’t do it – wife needs the car. I’m going to check it in the morning.”

“Got to run, Nick has the hose.”

“OK. Call me after you get out.”

Andrew picks up the phone:

“If you’re calling me to tell me how good it was this morning then go f*ck yourself.”

“No, I’m going down in a couple of hours, can you get out for a surf?”

“I’m in Hudson, NY.

“Where’s Hudson, NY?”

“It’s where even if I left now I wouldn’t be able to surf today. Call me when you get out and let me know how it was.”

Bryce picks up the phone:

“Hello”

“Hey Bryce, it’s Adam. How is it?”

“Good, really good.”

“Good, I’m coming down for an afternoon surf.”

“OK, I surfed twice today already. I’m going to go back out around 4:30. Call me when you get down.”

Phone rings, Drew answers:

“What the f*ck, I don’t hear from you for two months, and now you call me twice in two days.”

“It’s overhead in Jersey, meet me down on the shore in a couple of hours.”

“Can’t do it – I have to go to New Jersey for a party tonight.”

“Come on, have your fiancee drop you off at that rest stop on the Garden State, and I’ll meet you there. It’s the same State!”

“Can’t do it. Are you going to Hawaii next month?”

“F*ck off. Got to run, Nick is soaking wet.”

“Ok, call me after you get out and let me know how it was.”

San Diego shaper Josh Hall was in the City recently and he stopped off at Mollusk to talk some shop with the boys – who also arranged a shaping session with Joey Falcone out in the Rockaways. Joey posted some photos of the board they shaped, a 7′6 Fish Simmons Quad (Geppies in the mail). Contact Mollusk NYC for more information on the board, and click here for more on Josh’s trip.
