Mollusk has a slew of events scheduled for next couple of weeks; starting Tuesday, Oct. 2 with a screening of Michael Halsband’s “Surf Movie: Reels 1-14″, and an in-store exhibit of in-store exhibit “Are You Experienced?”, featuring boards by New York surfer and board collector John ‘Dubstar’ Schultz. “Are You Experienced” takes a look back at 1967, when people started cutting down their longboards into shortboards and shredding began.

The N’East Magazine folks have been working hard preparing for yet another World Series without the Red Sox. Tyler sent word that the new “Throwback” issue, featuring Guest Editor and Unsound Pro 2007 champ Sam Hammer, is out.

And last but not least, Chilltown JC resident Joe Levy embarked on a 50-mile bike tour to raise money for LRO’s They Will Surf Again program. As an employee of Merrill-Lynch, his employer has generously agreed to support his hard work by matching any funds Joe raises through this effort. Thus far, Joe has surpassed his original goal and is well on his way to reaching his new goal of $2,500 with hopes of funding additional equipment for They Will Surf Again.

Have another Shot

I was fourteen when my friend called to tell me that he had just received a bunch of skate videos and that I had to stop over, on my way to baseball practice, to check them out. His parents were never home, which meant we had access to the bar and a big screen TV. We each did a shot of tequilla and he fast-forwarded to the Banks. We must’ve watched this session 10 times in a row. During rewinds I’d hear “Have another Shot.”

Thank you.

Coach made all the late arrivals do 6 laps around the track. I didn’t throw up, but I did get hit in the head with a baseball towards the end of practice. Didn’t see it coming.

Surfing is a Crime

(Ticket received by a Surfer in Montauk. Click here for more info on how you can help.)

I once got a ticket for taking a leak on 33rd Street and West Side Highway. On the ticket it said “disposing of noxious liquids into shrubs.” I was kind of pissed off, and a little embarrassed, because I went out of my way to find a private area. You know when you got to go, you got to go. The worst part about it was the cop wrote the ticket while I was going to the bathroom, at one point saying to me “No, don’t let me stop you.” Now if that doesn’t give you stage fright, what will? What really got me was that same night I was stuck in cross town traffic when a guy literally got out of his car in front of me and emptied the tank right on 48th street.

Now I can handle a ticket for noxious liquids, but getting a ticket for surfing really stinks. Surfrider Foundation thought they had this battle won, but apparently more tickets are being issued and Joe Giannini, a local attorney and Surfrider activist who is taking a lead in this fight, is asking for your support. Tom Carroll Chlorine Dreams

For a while there, it looked like the B-64 to the B-6 to the Green Lines to the Rockaways was no longer going to be the daily commute for Rick Kane of Dyker Heights. His days of driving a golf cart like a maniac down the fairway during those long flat summer days at the golf course were coming to an end. He saw his ticket to the North Shore and it was printed on his mother’s monthly EZ-Pass statements. That was until September 22, 2007, when Rick wished he bought the News.

Surf Sacrifice

It is high time for a surf sacrifice. The last shot of overhead surf came for about 45 minutes in mars-like conditions a couple of weeks ago. I’ve gone through the garage looking for a board to burn, but looking through the quiver I think there are maybe two or three “overhead for a week straight” worthy boards and frankly I just haven’t surfed them enough.

However I got to thinking that we haven’t really had a magical hurricane season since the rise of the dot com era of surfing. So maybe it’s time to sacrifice a few websites to kick up something more than a little chest high swell.

Sacrifice Surfline, perhaps? How about the Surfermag BB? What about Newyorksurf? Something tells me Sway’s may be the best choice yet for 10 days of overhead offshore perfection, but I say we save that for next August as I’ve used up most of my vacation days for ‘07 anyway.

Faktion Blues

Today is the official last day of summer, so I guess that means that starting tomorrow we should see significant wave heights bump up about 2ft. At least it looks and feels like September.

Petro at Faktion sent word that his new shaping room is in order. His little shreddahs are the perfect cure for the summertime blues. Everytime I see a photo of one of his boards, it reminds me to drop off an old transition board I need to have restored. One of these days.

Mr. Grass Stain is organizing a Garage Guru Summit for some time in October / November. The only criteria for attendance is that you shape your own boards and you know the difference between Austria and Australia.
