Big Johnny, stoked and glowing on his son’s first place finish at the 24 Heures Du Mans and I, stoked on his own overhead waveriding and classic surf style, talked about an old Cooper Board on which he learned to surf. I immediately flashed back to the road sign, “Petacalco 34km,” and the barely visible wave-killing stacks on the horizon, and wondered if I my drive up the Pan American was actually a drive through Vol. 8 No. 4. Sadly or luckily, the surf never got as big or as perfect as Saunders remembers, but it wasn’t Peta anyway, and it was as big and as perfect as it needed to be, which I’ll never forget.
