“(It was never determined if Curren was displaying his chronic absentmindedness or making a quiet but effective anticorporate statement in 1992 when he won a world tour surf contest in Hawaii on a board conspicuously free of logos and trademarks; longtime sponsor Ocean Pacific, however, was angry enough to drop Curren from its roster. A few weeks later Curren signed the richest contract in surfing at the time: a five-year, $2 million deal with Rip Curl.)” – Matt Warshaw, “The Encyclopedia of Surfing”, p.145

“…I sacrificed relationships with family and friends to be able to do this art for many years. Given that, it was not easy to let go a craft I so loved historically and socially.” – Mare139

“They’re trying. What’s frightening to think about is man might be culpable, because of things like mercury and pollution. The big questions with autism are: Why is it getting worse? Why are more children being affected today than ever? And can it be prevented?” It’s a pretty alarming issue that anyone thinking about having children has to face, because about one out of every 160 kids are going to get it.”

N’EAST MAG Launches Issue 7 – The First Photo Annual

January 10, 2007 by Newyorksurf

The long awaited Photo Annual has arrived. N’East Magazine’s first ever Photo Annual i loaded with shots from top photographers, photo essays, and 30 pages of progressiv photography resulting in a gallery suitable for everyone’s coffee table.

IN THIS ISSUE
” Check out Jersey Girl Ann Coen’s opening photo spread. A big, bright harvest moon shining over midnight rollers and accentuated by a multitude of shooting stars begins the visual journey. The Photo Annual captures these moments we all wish could last. These are the moments that define our lives. So keep them around for a while, and keep issue 7 on your coffee table, the back seat of your toilet, or under your pillow a little longer this time.” says Danny Louten, Designer.

Along with the photo gallery, N’East helps celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the US Open with a look into the progression of the event throughout the years. Whether it’s 80s highlighter yellow gear or current day tricks and athletes, the US Open continues to be the industry’s pinnacle event.

Also in this issue, on newsstands until late February, is a look at Carrabassett Valley Academy’s ALPS Program. The photo essay follows CVA’s high school students along on their educational trip to the slopes of France and takes a look at what these kids get to call homework.

The Red BulI Illume Image Contest, the first international photography contest, is also showcased in the Photo Annual. The contest is in the same vein as N’East, as it celebrates the world of action sports and adventure sports through photography.

UPCOMING
This winter should be busy for the N’East crew. We will be first hitting it off at the Mt. Washington Ice Festival February 8-11. Just like last year, N’East will be attending the US Open in Stratton, from March 16 -18. As one of the biggest events of the year for N’East, we plan to keep the vibe alive. Right after the Open, we will be back in Stratton at the VT Freeskiing Open from the 23-26 of March. You can also catch us at the Orage Pros and Powder Tour at Loon Mountain March 3 and Stowe Mountain March 31.

Thanks for all the support – be sure to check us out at neastmag.com for information on events and dates.

Underground Existence NYS Interview: Tom Parrish

“I Guess what I have always tried to do is make the board as good as I can without regard to how long it takes or how much I make off of it. Try not to feel any compulsion to finish it at the end of a session, because there is always another session and my eye is fresher at the beginning of a session. So I keep coming back to them and finding little things to make them more custom or fit what the person wants. That approach was true then, and the same now. ” – Tom Parrish
