There will be a meeting of the LB Action Committee for this Tuesday April 25th a 7:30 at Starbuck’s in Long Beach. We are truly down to the wire, things ar happening quickly and we need to mobilize. Please make every effort to attend
If you have not yet heard, it was just announced that the City Council will vote on accepting or rejecting the ACOE project on Thursday May 4th at 8pm. This will take place at City Hall.
The City received an extension on the May 1st deadline set by the Corps so don’t think we’re home free because its after the deadline. There are no modifications. They will vote on the plan that includes rehabbed jetties, under boardwalk dune, and the unsampled dredged material being pumped on our beaches and into our surfzone and swimming areas to raise the elevation of the beach. As you all know, this last item is the true deal breaker.
I ASK THAT EVERYONE DO THEIR BEST TO ATTEND THE MAY 4th MEETING TO DEMONSTRATE OUR SOLIDARITY AGAINST THE PROJECT AS IT EXISTS.
There will also be a regular City Council meeting with a Good and Welfare portion on Tuesday May 2. Sign up to speak at Good and Welfare is at approx. 7:45. You will then have the opportunity to speak after the regular part of the meeting. This may be the last time we have to voice our opposition as I’m not sure how much opportunity to speak we’ll have on the 4th.
I am looking forward to the meeting this Tuesday Night the 25th at Starbuck’s to coordinate our efforts for the following week. If you are unable to make it but can make yourself available for the events of next week please let me know.
We have truly come a long way and that is because we have presented a united front. Please do all you can to attend.

The ACOE has notified the City of Long Beach to decide by May 1, 2006 whether t green light a $98 million federal beach replenishment project
“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has drawn a line in the sand for the City of Long Beach: Decide by May 1 whether to go ahead with a $98-million federal project designed to give the barrier island increased protection from a major storm. The city should just let the tide wash this idea away. ”

LB ACOE Update

This past week at the Good and Welfare Portion of the City Council Meeting abou 15 people spoke in opposition to the ACOE Project.
No one spoke in favor. What was impressive was that the speakers were not only Surfrider members and other surfers but non-surfing members of the community who have become involved because of our efforts. While the Council is definitely listening, the fight is far from being over. When asked when will they vote and if they plan on meeting the May 1st deadline established by the Corps, they answered “we haven’t addressed that yet.”
As the Council continues to be the focus of our efforts we are encouraging people, particularly LB residents of voting age, to email their opposition to City Hall at www.info@longbeachny.org
If you choose to do this make sure to include your name and address.
For additional info feel free to Private Message (PM) Ozzy.
