Surfrider LI – East Coast Chapter Activists Conference
October 12, 2005 by Newyorksurf
On October 22 & 23, the Surfrider Foundation will conduct the 2005 East Coast Chapter Activists Conference. This year, the Eastern Long Island chapter is host and the conference will take place in Montauk at the Montauk Manor, 236 Edgemere Street.
The two-day conference agenda was developed with input received from East Coast activists, and is open to all activists and/or members who wish to attend. It will be very informative and a great way to meet our leaders from Surfrider national headquarters, members from other chapters, as well as share ideas about ways to protect our beaches, oceans and rights as surfers. If you are interested in attending, please e-mail or call Tom Naro at tnaro@optonline.net or 631-848-9927.
We have been fighting several important battles lately, including the Army Corps of Engineers proposed revetment around the Montauk Point Lighthouse (we are working with the Corps to ensure they come up with a plan that won’t kill the waves), State Parks ban on surfing at several locations (surfing is now legal at Camp Hero — there are several other spots we must now address), and a proposed ban on motor vehicle access to our beaches (an access issue we will fight because it is was brought on by rich ocean front homeowners who want to privatize the beaches), just to name a few.
We can’t fight these fights without your help. If you’ve ever thought about becoming more involved with Surfrider, you should attend all or part of this conference. Below is the agenda for the two days. Plus, there is a great party gearing up for Saturday night after the meetings are over — and waves permitting, we will get some surfing in. More will follow on that.
Hope to see you at one or all of the discussions.
