The third annual SURF MOVIE NIGHT returns to the John Drew Theater, Guild Hall in East Hampton with Rafael Mellin’s sambatrance&rockn’roll along with a live performance by special musical guests Bastards of Boom. SURF MOVIE NIGHT III will take place on Wednesday, August 10 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15.00 and will be available at Guild Hall the night of the movie only. Tickets are FREE with any new membership to Surfrider, and $5 with any renewing membership.
SURF MOVIE NIGHT III is a benefit or the Eastern Long Island Chapter of Surfrider Foundation.
As always, there will be door prizes courtesy of Air & Speed, Equilibrium, Espo’s, Flying Point, Island Surf, Jetties, Main Beach, Skidmore’s and Sunrise to Sunset.
sambatrance&rockn’roll was the winner of the 2005 Biarritz Film Festival. It features Brazilian surf stars Bernardo Pigmeu, Danylo Gaillo and Marcondes Rocha along with surf superstars Kelly Slater and Andy Irons among others. The film is shot at surf locations throughout Brazil (Rio, Sao Paulo, Bahia), as well as Hawaii, the Maldives, Indo and Central America.
Previous films from SURF MOVIE NIGHT’s I and II also won big at this year’s Biarritz Film Festival. Local Surfrider member Michael Halsband won best cinematography for Surf Movie: Reels 1 to 14 and Thomas Campbell’s Sprout won the award for best soundtrack.
Special musical guests, Bastards of Boom, with their exciting mix of traditional Brazilian rhythms along with rock, middle eastern, and electronic melodies, will perform live.
Bastards of Boom was formed in 2004 when drummers from Escola de Samba Boom, Dalton Portella, Mara Hogan, Roni Dias, Rafa Pimenta, Bastian Kuberek, Curtis DeForest Jr. and Arjun Achutan started a side project that mixes traditional Brazilian rhythms with Dalton’s guitar synth wall of sound and John Gray’s rock drums, thus bastardizing the whole arrangement. Since then Ryan King has joined on bass and sampler bringing in another electronic element with Mara, Arjun and Roni providing a vocal presence.
While Bastards of Boom explore sounds from around the world, they always return to their roots by spotlighting traditional Brazilian instruments, song, and movement during every show.
